Another Catholic Governor Says Full-Steam-Ahead on Redefining Marriage

As New York’s new marriage law goes live Sunday, Maryland’s governor follows Andrew Cuomo’s lead. As the Baltimore Sun reports:

Standing with House and Senate supporters, Gov. Martin O’Malley announced this afternoon that he will lead the charge for gay marriage in Maryland and put his name on a bill that allows same-sex couples to wed.

“Marylanders of all walks of life want their children to live in a loving, stable, committed home protected under the law,” O’Malley said. He said it would be one of “a small handful” of legislative priorities.

The governor was supportive of same-sex marriage last year, but stayed mostly in the background. Today’s announcement was rumored for weeks, with chatter increasing after a gay marriage bill was signed into law in New York.

The Maryland Catholic Conference immediately issued a statement calling the governor’s decision “regrettable.” “The moral and social impacts of redefining marriage would be pervasive and severe,” according to the statement.

Martin O’Malley is a Catholic and a graduate of my alma mater, the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. As is Maureen Dowd, who yukked it up about eternal damnation with Andrew Cuomo recently in a same-sex-marriage-victory cackles column.

As you may recall, last year, churches inundated Annapolis to stop an attempt at redefining marriage there. Pray that they will fight another day.

And pray too we all recommit ourselves to supporting actual marriages, practically, in our lives, too — not only in political fights.

Oh… I am very saddened by some people on that list of CUA graduates. I’m considering going there for my Master’s in Philosophy. Well, at least Fulton Sheen’s on the list!

Props to elected public officials who are Catholic and who understand the separation of church and state. More and more Jewish and Christian faith communities are ordaining openly same sex clergy and blessing same sex couples. They understand that the Levitican prohibitions against certain kinds of homosexual activity were either directed at temple prostitution and other idolatrous activities, or else do not reflect a complete understanding of human sexuality. They no longer apply. You seem to think it’s OK to trample on their religious beliefs and practices as they celebrate gay marriages while claiming your religious views about gay marriage should be enshrined in laws binding on all. As long as the State doesn’t force the Catholic church to celebrate gay marriages, you need to stop trying to impose your religious beliefs on everyone else. You need to learn what it means to live in a secular republic and a pluralistic society. In your churches you are free to persist in your discrimination against and persecution of LGBTs and your celebration of heterosexism. AFter all, it’s still legal to be a member of the KKK and proclaim the inferiority of non-whites. It’s you are attacking the principle of religious freedom. And of course, you, who are the bullies, disingenously play the martyred victim card.

Dear Kathryn, Could you please pass on to your friend Rod Dreher that I for one believe his vitriol is uncalled for. I disagee with several bishops on various matters, however, I never make my case in such a rude and nasty tone. ~ Pax, Greg

  4. Bill says:

Catholics are writers, they are not DO-ERS. They stand about wringing their hands wailing “Woe is me!” Some Catholics make very nice incomes as writers. Their motto is “We don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.” One day they awaken and their entire world has been destroyed because THEY DID NOTHING ABOUT IT! In my business circles, the “Americans” are stunned when they learn I am Catholic. They associate Catholicism with ethnic, blue collar, “donkeys” led by effeminate priests and bishops. They are not being pejorative. I see Catholics the same way! It took 19 years to throw that heretic, Fr. Charles Curran, out of Catholic U. and the Vatican had to do it. He has been at Southern Methodist for years which is right where he ALWAYS belonged. Why is not every pro-abort, pro-aberrosexual union catholic (sic) EXCOMMUNICATED. Employers are “excommunicating” (laying off) employees every day due to lack of work, and the employee has committed no crime at all. Read para #2357 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and ask why the Church takes no steps to stop this obscenity.
