Anti-Science? Fact-Resistant Secular Myths

Religious people are so insistent on our faith-based worldview that we reject scientific fact to preserve our comfortable fiction. Right?

That’s the charge that is often made. And it has been true too often. But it is also true that religious people invented science in the first place, and faith has given many scientists the courage to be a hard-headed scientific realists.

It isn’t faith but ideology that drives us to shut out the facts that we don’t like. And secularist ideologues are every bit as susceptible to this as religious ones.

Here are some examples of the crazy myths secularists are making up to explain (or explain away) the aspects of reality that don’t fit their ideology.

beginningsMYTH: You can make an unborn child non-human with your mind.

Science knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that an unborn child is just that: An unborn child. A human embryo from the first day of conception already has the DNA which will determine the child’s sex and many other characteristics.

But for the sake of ideology, secularists in the schools and the media routinely play a language game to dehumanize this particular group of human beings, calling them “zygotes,” “tissue,” or referring to them as “a pregnancy.”

Wendy Davis and Kermit Gosnell show the revolting extremes this can go to, supporting the destruction of babies 20+ weeks old in the womb.

On one of the occasions when he objected to a bill protecting babies born alive during abortions, Barack Obama explained why. He told the Illinois Senate that pro-abortion politicians must ignore the reality of the humanity of children or all is lost:

“Number one, whenever we define a previable fetus as a person that is protected by the equal protection clause or the other elements in the Constitution, what we’re really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a – child, a nine-month-old – child that was delivered to term. That determination then, essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place.”

boy in girls bathroomYes .. if we admit babies are human, then courts would not allow us to kill them. So the facts must adhere to the ideology.

MYTH: You can make yourself a boy or a girl with your mind.

The whistle-blower formerly known as Bradley Manning was a “he” on a Wednesday but on Thursday demanded to be called a “she.”  Anchorperson Don/Dawn Ennis did the same thing … twice. But the parents of a 6-year-old Argentinian boy are making the call for him.

There are scientific explanations for gender misidentification, but modern laws about transgender don’t assign scientific criteria for gender — they invite each of us to decide our gender for ourselves.

If it seems like making one’s sex a matter of individual decision might be a bad idea, it is. In California schools, grade schoolers can use the restroom of the gender they feel like.  This has of course led to situations of alleged harassment like this one:

A female student “claims the boy in question harassed her, touched her hair, stared strangely at her, and also peeked at girls over the stalls while they used the toilet.”

MYTH:
If we believe in them enough, promoting condoms will someday slow the spread of STDs.

One of the strangest spectacles of secularist myth-making is the absolute insistence that promoting condoms helps young people, when it is clear that doing so makes them sick.

Combined_OverallCondoms are pretty effective when used; I don’t argue otherwise.

But the statistics all say that more often than not they are simply not used. A 2010 University of Indiana study surveyed 5,865 adolescents and adults and found that a condom is involved in only about 1 in every 3 acts of extra-marital sexual intercourse. Furthermore they are almost never used in acts of oral sex, as this article candidly admits.

We would never promote climbing on electrical wires with rubber gloves to our kids. But we routinely Bet Their Lives that condom promotions that lower sexual taboos will somehow lead them to be the ones to break the societal mold and wear condoms regularly.

No wonder that despite years of condoms promotions, sexually transmitted diseases are a “severe, ongoing epidemic” in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

per square mileMYTH: The world faces an overpopulation crisis.

Secularists using pseudo-science like to point out how terrible it is that there are so many people on the planet, and they paint a dire picture of increasing poverty and famine as population soars and we fight each other for scarce resources.

The facts have done nothing to slow down the science-resistant secularist mythmakers. Stephen Mosher runs down some of the facts here.

  • In 1800, we had only 1 billion people. And per-capital income worldwide was $100. Now, we have more than 7 billion. And per-capita income worldwide is $9,000
  • Crop yields have more than kept pace with population.
  • “Economies continue to expand, productivity is up, and pollution is declining. Life spans are lengthening, poverty is down, and political freedom is growing. The human race has never been so well off.”
  • The only threat he sees is underpopulation — with half of the world’s population below replacement fertility. Today’s anti-population crusaders are tomorrow’s lonely oldsters.

“He who does not believe in God will believe in anything.”

Chesterton never said it in those words, but as Dale Ahlquist points out, they are definitely Chestertonian.

Faith and reason are two wings that rise together to the truth. People of faith should embrace both. Let the ideologues pick belief over reality.

  1. And according to the National Institute for Health, condoms only reduce the risk of transmitting 2 of 8 STDs which they studied because many STDs can be spread via the hands and other areas not covered by a condom.

  2. Kath says:

When a woman becomes pregnant it is no longer just her, there is now another human being in the early stages of development, There are two hearts, two sets of DNA. Society and humanity has determined justly that to take a life is murder and is against the individual as well as humanity. Claiming a fetus is not a human being, when in fact it cannot be anything but a human being, is just an excuse for an individual to reject the consequences of their actions which resulted in the creation of the human being. It is a very selfish and cruel act for a woman to “eliminate” her child for her convenience. A woman has self determination when her body is hers alone, once pregnant, her body is not hers alone, there is another human being and she is responsible for that life

  3. Peter says:

Eric, I would turn that question back to you. Does the unborn child, from the moment of conception, have its own right to exist or is it the property of its mother? That was the defining issue of slavery: slaves were property, subject to the whims of their masters. In legalizing abortion on demand we have replaced one form of slavery with another.

    1. Bill says:

We have replaced one form of barbarism (slavery) with another(abortion).

    2. eric says:

Of course, the fetus is part of a woman’s body. Is a fetus her “property?” I guess that depends on your definition of “property.” If you consider a woman’s heart, lungs, brain, etc. as her property, then yes, a fetus is her property.

  4. eric says:

The question of whether or not a fetus is a human being really isn’t the point. In fact, that debate could go on for ages. The question is whether or not a woman has the right to determine when she will become a mother. Does society have the right to take away a woman’s right of choice at the moment she becomes pregnant? Does society own a woman’s fetus and therefore her body, when she becomes pregnant? Does a woman become public property when she becomes pregnant?

    1. Liz says:

Eric, do you realize what you’re saying? That it doesn’t matter whether a fetus – again, a medical term for a stage of human development, just like “adolescent” or “adult” – is human or not? That allowing the mother to kill it is allowing her to have “choice”? You completely missed the scientific points of this article. Do we have a right to choose whether to kill another human being because they are dependent on us? When a woman has sex, she is using her reproductive parts; when pregnancy results, it is a healthy condition, not an aberration. A human being’s value and dignity do not depend on their age, location, or ability to take care of themselves; those who are vulnerable in these areas are the first to be attacked by societies that objectify human beings and turn them in to mere utilitarian objects – the result of materialism – that should be disposed of when no longer useful of convenient. Thus, the Nazis killed not only Jews, whom they proclaimed “less than human” as our society proclaims the unborn, but also the mentally and physically handicapped.

      1. eric says:

Liz, then I guess your answer to my questions is “yes.” If your statements are correct, why are anti-abortions advocates not demanding the prosecution of women for first degree murder when they have abortions? Also, if you are correct, why isn’t a fetus 9 months old when born? Just curious.

    2. Artemus says:

The question actually is does the mother own the life of the child inside of her. If she does then what determines the time in which an abortion is ok? It is an arbitrary decision. The life belongs to the child not the mother.

    3. Susan says:

@ Eric… Of course a woman has a right to determine when she will become a mother… it is very simple… don’t have sex when you are fertile and if you are not in a position to be able to raise a child… why does a child have to die because a woman is careless, promiscuous and reassured that she will always have the right to kill her child if things do not work out the way she had planned. This argument is non-sense women do have a choice and it is before they become pregnant. We have a culture that acts like having sex whenever and with whomever is as essential as eating, drinking and breathing… and woe to the person that suggests otherwise. And before the red herring of rape and incest are thrown in let me add a couple of facts…First it is a very low percentage of rapes that result in pregnancy see: http://www.christianliferesources.com/article/rape-pregnancies-are-rare-461 and finally and in fact abortion on demand and without parental consent actually helps the perpetrators of incest and statutory rape continue continue to get away with it and avoid prosecution….

      1. eric says:

How do you propose to stop women from having sex? What’s your solution? Making abortion illegal? History shows that that doesn’t stop women from having sex and doesn’t stop unwanted pregnancies and doesn’t stop abortions. Do we lock up all pregnant women until they give birth? Do we lock up our children when they reach puberty? Do we harvest the eggs from all women monthly until the women reach some perceived level of intellectual and emotional maturity? Do we somehow develop a way to eliminate the sexual urge in human beings? I wait for your response. We are all born with the “urge” to pro-create and connect. How do we, as a society, ethically end unwanted pregnancies? Making abortion illegal not only doesn’t work but it’s also unethical because it makes all women “slaves” to the whims of society or to religious doctrine.

    4. Carl G. Oehling says:

The moment the two haploid cells join the woman is a mother. Child support cases have always proven that scientific point by DNA.

  5. Chris says:

Excellent article. Exactly right. Mr Obama’s revealed his “logic”: Human children in the womb are not human because then we couldn’t abort them!
