It appears that Cardinal de Paolis was somewhat misconstrued — he was presented a theoretical case “If a Cardinal were involved in…, would he be permitted to take part in the Conclave?” And Cardinal De Paolis gave him an academic’s answer, that someone with moral authority over him ought to urge him not to attend, but by law, he would be permitted. The Cardinal was not commenting directly on Cardinal Mahoney.

I fully agree with your choice but the problem is that he is now 70 and I don’t think the College of Cardinals wants to have a conclave too soon after the election of a new Pope.

And the scandal goes on because it is my understanding that Mahony and Bishop Curry are scheduled to do confirmations. Now, if I were a victim of sexual abuse, I would be livid at the thought these guys should confirm anyone in the faith.
The only guys they should confirm should be fellow immates at prison!

Cardinal Ouellet would be quite worthwhile, it’s too soon to say. Like the good Benedict, he does not wish the office, so it’s anybody’s guess.
