This coming Saturday, April 28, in “Rugbytown, USA,” the rugby teams from Franciscan University of Steubenville and Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, will clash in the semi-final round of the National Small College Rugby Organization Division 3 final four tournament.

Salve Regina is in the semi-final round for the second straight year, but this is the first time Franciscan, where I work, has made it this far.

Our schools are about the same size—it appears Salve Regina is slightly larger—and both are about the same age—Franciscan founded in 1946 by the Franciscans TOR and Salve Regina in 1947 by the Sisters of Mercy.

Their semi-final match starts at 1 p.m. Mountain Time on Saturday, and the winner will square off against the winner of the 3 p.m. match between the University of North Florida and Cal Maritime Academy in the championship match the next day at 1 p.m.

Go Barons!

Awesome. I am really happy to apply to Steubenville next fall. Rugby=best sport ever!

Good story. But the more important story is the way both of these schools truly live their catholic missions on and off the field. Both teams have a record of public service in their communities of which they can be proud.

Also, Franciscan is the larger school. When looking at male enrollment, Franciscan is actually 22% larger than its New England neighbor. Franciscan 2011-12 undergrad enrollment is 2096 (38% or 796 of whom are male). Salve Regina’s undergraduate enrollment is 2022 (30.9% or 625 of whom are male).
