On the Cuomo Communion Question, here comes everybody!

To date my father canon lawyer Ed Peters’ comments on Andrew Cuomo and his ineligibility to receive Communion have garnered over 500 headlines:

Of course my father didn’t go looking for this conflagration – he just answered an interview request. You can chalk up the avalanche of resulting headlines to a) general public interest in the salacious details of Governor Cuomo’s personal life and b) general public ignorance about the Church’s teaching on the Communion question.

But the corollary c) to this most recent episode in the Communion controversy (I absolutely hate the secularized term for this, “Waferwars”, “Wafergate”, etc. – blech!) has been the predictable list of progressive Catholics who have taken this opportunity to once again dissent from the Church’s pastoral discipline on who is eligible to receive Communion.

For those interested in this uneven match, here are the relevant links on my father’s blog:

You can keep up on this debate more easily by following my father on twitter @canonlaw.

Janice O'Rourke's column ends: "It certainly should not be some anonymous Canon Lawyer from Detroit." Heh!

Ha! I saw that too, JP. I was beside myself! How many times do I have to sign my name before I'm not anonymous? Insignificant, yes, but surely not anonymous.

I am thinking it is much more "b" than "a" - even if there is just as many people interested in the details, the ignorance is likely significantly greater.

When Cdl Ratzinger was on the cusp of entering the papal quarters, he took a monment and requested that Fr. Reese step down as the editor of America magazine. Fr. Reese has been "off the reservation" for years and no one shuts him up. When Dr. Peters cites specifics of Canon Law it is not fair to the children of the Spirit of Vatican II. They are used to feelings, the fundamental option, the goal matters, not the means, "can't we all get along?". You see what I mean.

The large response is no surprise at all. This is a long neglected problem that has done grave harm to the lives of countless victims. Ed Peter's has conducted himself in an exemplary fashion and it is wonderful to see this play out in public and to finally see a fine Catholic gentleman speak out in defense of the Eucharist, as well as marriage. Thank you, Dr. Peters. If only Governor Cuomo would turn inward to recall the innocent conscience of his youth and turn from this relationship, respect the vows he spoke in public with his wife, respect the value of his example to others who are watching him, especially his children, others in similar circumstances and other whose lives could be drawn to Jesus Christ, through humility. What do you say, Andrew? God is watching, so are we.

And renounce your past support for advancing the Culture of Death and destroying the institution of marriage as defined by God Himself...

Two thousand years ago, a man with a decidedly non-standard diet and wardrobe lost his head because he pointed out the sinfulness of the living arrangements of one at the top of the political food chain. Today, the penalties for bearing witness to the truth are not as severe, and yet so few seem willing to endure having someone say stupid and mean things about them as the price of bearing witness to the same, unchanging truth.

Mr. Flynn, are you saying that Dr. Peters does not know how to dress? 8-) P.S. I love reading your comments. It's great to see you here, too.

Thanks to both of you. Dr. Peters has shown that one can be a voice crying out in the wilderness while wearing a navy blazer and an oxford cloth button down shirt.
