In the past I’ve compiled a list of all the bishops speaking out on a particular controversial issue (for instance, over Notre Dame’s invitation to President Obama) — here are the bishops who have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate.
[See my ongoing coverage of Obama/HHS's war against religious liberty here, here, here and most recently here. I'm also tweeting more updates @AmericanPapist.]
If I have missed anyone please let me know in the comments! And please double-check that your bishop really is not there before posting.
Items in bold mean the statement was read at all diocesan Masses or included in all parish bulletins on Sunday.
Thank you to AmP reader Matthew for helping me group these bishops by province!

we should speak out too. Here is a petition on the White House's Website. https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#!/petition/rescind-hhs-dept-mandate-requiring-catholic-employers-provide-contraceptivesabortifacients-their/lBxr7SdP Sign it and let Oboma know that he cannot get away with this. Why haven't 93 Bishops ever spoken out against all the errors being spread throughout our Faith? Why haven't they spoken out about the multitude of abuses which go on unchecked during so many Masses? Why haven't they ever spoken out about all the heterodox priests in the media, a la Fr. Ed Beck, Bishop Timothy Dolan's good friend? It is very clear that the Bishops have an ulterior motive in speaking out. Are they worried about the future of their tax exempt status? Or is it something else? We've got everyone from Cardinal Mahoney to Sr. Carol Keehan speaking out about this. It's not because they are oh so concerned about the defense of authentic Catholicism and the ever-present threats to our Faith. After all, people like Mahoney and Keehan are among the biggest threats to our Faith! Why can't 93 Bishops speak out against overt homosexual lifestyles? Why can't 93 Bishops speak up in the defense of the True Presence? Why can't 93 Bishops uphold Canon 915?

So you are saying that the word cloud showing the word "Obama" is wrong? The Internal Revenue state: "Currently, the law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one "which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office." Legal rubbish you say?

Phillip, one can hardly discuss a statement by our President without mentioning his name. The use of his name does not violate any laws, and you have quoted a law regarding political "campaign" activity. Are you saying that the HHS decision qualifies as a campaign activity? Or are you saying that nothing the President does can be discussed in a church? Make that, in a Catholic church. In our town, candidates in the Democratic party most definitely campaign in inner-city parishes, on Sunday, during the service. I don't care that they do. But if a Catholic parish discusses the President's actions against the Church, you say that falls under campaign laws? I think not.

The mandate came from President Obama's administration. The Catholic bishops are not saying to vote for o against Candidate Obama...they are challenging an unjust policy from President Obama and his secretary of health and human service.

Your major concern here is the Church saying something about politics but you have absolutely no problem with the state dictating to the Church, in violation of the first amendment no less, not some 501 statute. Are you concerned about violation of law or is that just your transparent premise?

Dear heavens, Phillip! We are responding to a direct attack by the federal government in our faith. Constitutionally, we have a perfect right to do so. The Church is not opposing Barry's re-election by defending itself in this regard! Personally I still am convinced this man is the final antichrist; that's why I'd NEVER vote for him.

Phillip, This has nothing to do with campaigning, strictly speaking. One could argue that all politicians are always campaigning, in which case your point would be that no religious group would be allowed to argue against the injustice of any regulation ever, which is patently absurd. No one is campaigning against the president's reelection here. The hope is to get HHS to get rid of this horrid regulation which limits the religious freedom of any Catholic run hospital, college, university or independent school. It is the Obama administration who made the regulation, and the regulation was only enacted last week. Nobody is saving this for a rainy campaign day. This is as immediate a response as it gets. My religious freedom as a Catholic educator is in jeopardy of being violated by this rule and you're saying that my bishop has no claim to defend my conscience on my behalf? That's secularist snobbery and demagoguery talking.

Look closely: The word OBAMA is the same size as ADMINISTRATION. Not surprising given this was a ruling issued by the Obama administration's Department of Health and Human Services. That is hardly campaigning for or against a candidate. It's criticizing a government policy, which is all perfectly legal.

I totally agree with you. Where were these bishops and priest when we needed them? They were silent when the Catholic faith was being attacked and not a word spoken by the clergy to defend the true teaching of our faith. They were too busy preaching love and social justice. Now they're reaping what the've sown. I'm afraid we can't do much except pray for them and what's to come. May God have mercy on all of us.

Perhaps Thomas's dad can hold forth on Canon 915. Perhaps your reading of canon law, and your judgment of heterodoxy, are what is lacking, rather than the bishops. And perhaps what you term abusive is merely mistaken, and deserves gentle correction rather than radical punishment. Perhaps the Holy Spirit, who has configured our bishops to Christ with a special charism, actually knows what he's doing.

Hi why do catholics bow to statues. Why do they think that Mary has something to do with salvation. There is No Purgitory only heaven and hell. Catholics teach false doctrine, mary and the saints have nothing to do with heaven and hell also the only one we need to interseed with is Jesus Its is only He Jesus that a Man may recieve salvation. All Popes and bishops are living a lie. the word of God is the only way. Does that movie show men bowing to mary or praying to saint Anthony because they lost there keys. how about digging a hole and planting a concrete statue upside down so your house sells quick? Catholic religion is simply that man made religion with man made laws. with a bunch of men who elivate them selves above man. No pope is worthy of the Word of God. Shame fall upon them that they may repent and seek mercy and know the True Grace of God - Jesus. Not Mary or rosary beads. Hail Mary No! Hail Jesus! that is all.

With respect do you realize how tired and trite all that protestant nonsense is? Each and every point you make has been defended and refuted a billion times over. It's old already. If you really want the truth about the only real Church on earth, the Catholic Church, seek it through Her and not some protestant minister who is, frankly, ignorant. And as far as the Word of God, that was compiled by, you guessed it, the Catholic Church. The Bible is a Catholic book. And it is only PART of the deposit of faith. It needs an authoritative interpreter, which would be the pillar and bulwark of truth... the Catholic Church. Without that you end up with 40,000 denominations and 40,000 different and conflicting interpretations.

Any mother who watches her child suffer, being tortured, beaten and then put to death in the most cruel way suffers with her child. Any loving mother would gladly swop places so that she could suffer all this instead of her child and you say, what has Mary got to do with our salvation? Because Mary said yes to God her fiat, through her God became Man, do you not think that this places her in a very special position with God the Father. How can one truely love the Son and ignore the mother. If God our Father and her son Jesus Christ and her spouse the Holy Spirit can honour her thus placing her in a very special place then who are we to say otherwise.

Tony, God Bless You but your Catholic Bigotry and ignorance is showing....just a bit. If you are really serious about your salvation which is the only success there is, you might want to revisit the "faith alone" "rapture" and heresy purveyors. BTW Martin Luther (who was/is the foundation of all non Catholic denominations) not only eliminated books from the approved Canon after 1000+ years but he actually had the gall to add to the Bible....especially when he added that itsy bitsy word..."alone" after the word "faith". That little word addition kind of changed the whole meaning/method of obtaining salvation besides giving new meaning to the words hubris & arrogance. Ispso facto it changed faith from the vertical axis of man to God to the horizontal man to man. Translation? Do what ever you want but as long as you accept Christ you are saved and going to heaven...because the only thing required is "faith alone" Oh really? Makes absolutely no sense even if your are an atheist. I'll take the 2000 years of unchanging truth, dogma and clarity continuously taught from the only divinely inspired Church founded by Jesus Christ himself. Namely, the Roman Catholic Church. Truth is hard but far preferable to the current man made 40,000+ (and counting) sects, cults, heresies etc all based on some individual's personal interpretation of the bible (sola scriptura). They can't all be right nor can the idea that you can just start your own "religion" if you disagree with the pastor of the month...no matter how well meaning they might be. You might start your research and education with where the Bible came from. Hint?...Your local pastor it is not. May I also suggest you check out John Henry Newman. He was an Anglican priest who later converted to Catholicism and became a Cardinal. I wish you well in your faith journey and hope you take the time to find the truth. After all it is only your eternal soul. Again God Bless You.

Tony, your argument is entirely wrong. You haven't a clue about the practices of the Church. Where to start...oh, yeah..."man made" like LUTHERans or CALVINists? No, the Catholic Church is the ONLY Church founded by Christ in His own words and recorded in the same Scripture you mangle to your own destruction. Yes, the very same Scripture that you owe in whole to the Catholic Church. You can't even get off the ground without doing serious cheetah flips around the question: who decided which books belong in the Bible? Get a grip on yourself. By the way, interceed "to act on behalf of" interseed "placed between two seeds?" Grammar my brother, grammar - it can only help you.

Tony, It is best to do legitimate research before you make comments. Accepting what your pastor shouts at you from the pulpit about his biggest competitor (the Catholic Church) is not a legitimate source of information. So many Protestants blindly follow the hatred of the Catholic Church without ever finding out the truth. There are so many Protestant lies spewed, as covered very well by your statements. Try going to the source, like talking to a priest - ask your questions or make your above accusations and then be ready to listen not hate. Another great source, are apologetics books, written by your once fellow Protestant, fellow Catholic haters. Scott & Kimberly Hahn wrote Rome Sweet Home, try that. Read it and then attack when you have done legitimate research not merely absorbed hatred-spewed preaching

"Hail, Mary!" are the words of the Angel Gabriel when he greeted the woman who God found worthy enough to carry his only Son, and are thus recorded in the Bible. So I guess your REAL beef here is with the Bible --- or possibly with the Angel Gabriel --- or with God who obviously didn't have a problem with Mary --- rather than the Catholic Church. She was good enough for God, Jesus and angels, but not for you. Hmmmmm, you might want to noodle that through just a bit.

Ciao Tony, Hate to break it to you, but you have a common disease called "Misplaced Zeal". It has infected many before you. Don't worry us Catholics have many Doctors in the Church. Common Symptoms are: Making all too ready opinions, Making judgments about things and people you know nothing of or never knew anything of from the beginning, Not following the Direct commands of Jesus (Eucharist) Hating what is Good Failing to see GOD because you focus on what others are doing, Vomiting of already digested vomited nonsense, Drawing conclusions because you are too tired of thinking, Common Causes: Sola Scriptura or "Faith Alone" Don't worry though, like I said we have Doctors in our church and have developed a way for you to see The Physician....Sacrament of Reconciliation GOD's Peace be with you!!!!

Bishops, look at what is happening to your church. The true nature of it's hierarchy and failings has found itself in the light of day, and it's not a pretty picture. It's time for you to speak to god personally, and listen with an ear that does not presuppose what he has to say, must correspond with what someone else has written. I for one, would not be inclined to call him a liar to his face, were he speaking to me.....

Possibly a better link for Archbishop Meyers, as this letter is from January 26, 2012, instead of September 28, 2011: http://www.rcan.org/images/hhs_eng.pdf

Lafayette's Bishop did speak out, he's on the list. Indianapolis is Sede Vacante but they have an article by Cardinal-Designate Dolan on their main website.
