Double Take

"...and the tabernacle gets moved back behind the altar, or I don't come to speak at your church anymore. Sincerely..."

This item in the National Catholic Register elicited a good old fashioned “whuh…?” from yours truly:

“Threatening Letter Sent to 60,000 Churches by Thomas Peters of the American Papist Blog.”

You don’t say.  Now really Peters, you need to stop with these shenanigans.

A comma is such a little thing, but its absence can make such a difference.  Luckily, I was already familiar with the real story, having seen it direct from the horse’s mouth, as it were, in this little corner of the interwebs that we call home.  And of course, thems is good peeps at the Register, friendlies one could say, and certainly the inadvertent meaning implied by the headline was, well, inadvertent.

Funny though, too.

  1. Frank says:

Reminds me of the story told by the late Fr. Richard John Neuhaus about a Cardinal speaking at a parish featuring a banner that read: “God is other people.” Neuhaus described the wishes of the Cardinal to take out a magic marker and add a much needed comma after “other.”

  2. In His Service says:

I am truly surprised at the vitriol displayed in the comment
to this article. The author points out that lacking a comma in the right place
makes it appear as though Thomas sent the 60,000 letters to the churches. It
seems very odd to me that some of the commenters completely missed the point,
presumably because of the deep pain in their hearts. There exists in our
country today a hateful, mean spiritedness on the part of both sides of these
issues, a sad commentary on the state of our society…… I pray for a change of
heart for those of you affected by this hatefulness.

    1. Perhaps you should discuss this with Thomas Peters instead of blaming the commenters. He’s the one that works for a group devoted to creating divisiveness.

      1. Soros Troll Alert says:

Please ban the above user. He is a paid shill sent here from the heretical liberal fascists at Media Matters.

      2. Specificplan says:

        I think he was.

      3. abadilla says:

“I have come to bring the sword!” Gee, who said that? I would think anytime church teaching is applied, it is by its very nature divisive.

  3. Julie T. says:

Thank you for this amusing lesson on the importance of commas, John. It reminds me of a similar example given by one of my instructors years ago as to why we should keep the old rule of using the final comma in a series of three or more rather than follow the New York Times’ example of dispensing with it. Here is her example (as it would appear using the Times’ style guide): I love my parents, Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa. A single comma makes all the difference…

    1. I’m better looking than you.

      1. Joe M says:

Possibly. However, you clearly don’t use your time as well.

      2. abadilla says:

What a stupid, half ass asinine comment!

      3. Soros Troll Alert says:

This is the worst troll ever. And he’s using personal attacks against the main blogger on this website. Time to unleash the BANhammer.

  4. My profile on Thomas Peters. There’s more stuff to add, but I am really busy:

    1. abadilla says:

When one is losing an argument, one attacks the messenger. Thomas Peters has not done a thing to you but you are willing to smear his name, even though he allows your trash to be published here.

      1. Francine says:

It appears that Peters has done quite a bit to harm gay people. Pathetic excuse for a Catholic.

        1. Julie T. says:

So now you are “Francine” instead of “Francis”? What do you “notMarriage” Equality trolls do, keep a baby name book next to your computer for purposes of your next pseudonym? How do you remember who you are when you enter one of your hateful little comments? A warning for you: You may dismiss this, but you do so at the peril of your life now and your soul later. When you defame or persecute Christ’s Church, you defame or persecute Him. His Words, not ours. When you work to further evil, you are doing the work of the Evil One. God forbid, but persist in active cooperation with the fallen angels and one of them may decide it will feel entirely at home taking over your life—all of your life.

          1. See note above about attacking the messenger.

          2. Julie T. says:

You are not a messenger for anything except defaming and slandering the Catholic Church and Christ’s own teachings as handed down by His Apostles. You are either WITH Jesus Christ or you are AGAINST Him. Your posts are evidence that you are anti-Christ. If you don’t like the Catholic Church’s teachings, I suggest you prayerfully take it up with Jesus Himself and humble YOURSELF in order to be open to conversion through the Holy Spirit. If not, there is another message for you: Get behind us, Satan!

        2. abadilla says:

Get off this site. Thomas’ “sin” is to follow church teaching, and if you don’t like it, you don’t have to come into CV.

          1. fRaNkLiN says:

The church teaches us to respect our neighbors. Thomas fan hatred and hostility against them instead. That’s not what being a Catholic is about.

          2. abadilla says:

Would you say that the man who wrote the story of Sodom and Gomorrah was fanning hostility and hatred of homosexuals? Would you say that St. Paul in the book of Romans, when he wrote about homosexuality was fanning hostility and hatred of homosexuals? Are you saying the Pope and bishops, the magisterium of the Church, when it teaches about the sacredness of the sacrament of marriage, are fanning hostility and hatred of homosexuals?
Now, if you say “yes” to any of the above, why would you want to participae in a Catholic forum? What is it that Thomas says or writes that is antithetical to Catholic teaching?

    2. Buster says:

Seriously buddy, do you not have anything better to do with your life? Really, Thomas is famous and all, but I hope I am not the first person to suggest you could probably spend your time a lot more constructively. Clearly you aren’t very creative. So stay away from the arts. There has to be something though. Just trying to help a brother out.

    3. Soros Troll Alert says:

My profile on you: you’re a disgusting, perverted, no-good, foul, heretical, anti-Catholic liberal troll who is surely destined for hell and is determined to drag the rest of the nation with him. BAN this user!

  5. ifollowHATE says:

No, Peters just threatens gay people through his pledge to help form a commission to investigate any American that dares to support marriage equality for gay people. He also promised to “fan hostility” against blacks in the wake of Proposition 8, and to “drive a wedge” between Americans in order to accomplish his goals of limiting freedoms for gay people. Do we even need to mention the rally in New York that he helped organize where the main speaker said that gay people are “worthy of death”?

    That’s so much better.

    1. abadilla says:

How do you sleep at night after attacking a man so viciously because you can’t deal with his arguments? Your mind is in the gutter and that’s where it should stay, not in a Catholic forum! You know what Peters’ “sin” is? Loving the Church and using this site as a tool to promote the truth you can’t or won’t handle. Shame on you!
Thank you, you have inspire me to continue to help this website financially. I shall do so tomorrow.

      1. Truth extols says:

I wonder how Peters sleeps at night knowing the pain that he has caused to others.

        1. abadilla says:

Most likely he sleeps very well because he knows he is following Church teaching. He knows our Lord was killed for telling the truth, so he probably does not expect a better treatment from you.

    2. Sir Robert says:

Hey, go follow HATE back to hell where you got your horrible ideology, fiend.

    3. Soros Troll Alert says:

Spending all that time in the embrace of George Soros must be why you follow hate, looks like you sleep with it too. Ban this anti-Catholic weirdo!
