[UPDATED WITH VIDEO]: “Occupy Rome” Destroys Statue of Mary

UPDATE – I posted a photo of this earlier (see below). But via MatthewJLB, here’s video of it actually happening:

Taylor Marshall at Canterbury Tales spots this heartbreaking photo:

Taylor accurately observes:

At the recent economic “occupy” demonstration in Rome, the protesters decided to take their anger out on…our Blessed Mother! What?…

Did the Virgin Mary take away their jobs? Did the Immaculate Mother ruin the Euro? Did the sweet Mother of Christ endorse the rotten assets of Euro-nation banks? No.

Whatever we think about the OccupyWallStreet protests and their inter/national spin-offs, can we all agree that the destruction of private property, and especially religious property, is wrong?

Some people are trying to compare the OccupyWallStreet (OWS) protests with the Tea Party movement. I’ve watched both groups closely and the number of arrests and examples of destruction and civil disobedience displayed by OWS is exponentially greater.

Whatever the causes of both groups’ protests, the effects of their protests couldn’t be more different.

And frankly, when it comes to evaluating these protests, by their fruits you will know them.

UPDATE — some readers are trying to claim this vandalism was an “accident.” Oh?

The Vatican has condemned Saturday’s violent clashes in central Rome including an attack by protesters on a church in which a crucifix and a statue of the Virgin Mary were destroyed.

…“When I came down, I saw the entrance door had been smashed in,” the church’s parish priest, Father Giuseppe Ciucci, was quoted by Italian media as saying.

“The Virgin Mary’s statue, which was at the entrance, had been taken away and I saw it had been thrown into the street and smashed,” he said.

“I went into the sacristy and I saw the door there was also destroyed. The large crucifix at the entrance had been vandalized,” he added.

Hundreds of protesters torched cars, smashed banks and hurled rocks at police during the clashes. Tens of thousands of people had been protesting against government cutbacks and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

May the Queen of Heaven be calmed at this and may God have mercy on them.

I hope somebody picked up the pieces. I restore statuary and even in that state, the statue could be restored, even with missing so much.

As we know from our studies of St. Thomas, it is important to make distinctions. In fact, the statue was not destroyed by the “Occupy Rome” protesters. On that day, the peaceful march, (kids, prams, old people etc) was hijacked by a group of thugs who started smashing things after the march was about half over. They are the ones who got the international attention, of course, particularly after they clashed with the cops at St. John Lateran (tear gas, etc). They are known to the police, showing up at peaceful demonstrations recently to bust things up and annoy the public.

I think they think they’re “anarchists” or something. But for all practical purposes, they’re just thugs.

So a statue is more sacrid than human life? Can anyone else see the hypocracy in that? OMG! A STATUE WAS DESTROYED, IT WAS SACRID. But your fellow man/woman isn’t? If it were so sacrid how come there are so many of these same statues (manufactured in factories, well, now that’s sacrid) that these rich bastards own.

Big Deal. I’ts only a sin when you destroy a statue of mary when it’s weeping;} God is allowing this chaos and anarchy. Remember the time apparently when Christians were persecuted and feed to the lions by the roman empire. Look what happened they became Roman catholic. It’s a load of bull dust when people say that it’s persecution at the time of the end days. It has always happened and always will. Man is his worst enemy. until God decides what goes. then get with it. been happening since adam was in shorts!!!
