It’s time to end funding to Planned Parenthood

CatholicVote and a coalition of organizations have announced their support of legislation authored by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-TN.

The legislation is called the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act or H.R.61, and it would “prohibit the Secretary of Health and Human Service (HHS) from providing any federal family planning assistance to an entity unless the entity certifies that, during the period of such assistance, the entity will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, an abortion.” [Full text of the bill]

Planned Parenthood’s annual report, released on January 7, makes clear that our taxpayer money should not go to this organization:

  • Planned Parenthood committed 333,964 abortions during their 2011-2012 fiscal year, representing a record-high number.
  • Their annual report notes that they received a record $542 million in total taxpayer funding (federal, state and local governments) in one year, making up 45% of their annual revenue.
  • With our country’s continued debt problem, Planned Parenthood should not be receiving federal aid. Their own annual report declares an excess of $87.4 million in revenue from the past year and over $1.2 billion in assets.

Call Capitol Hill today at (202) 224-3121 and tell your Representative to co-sponsor H.R. 61. (You can look up your Representative here.)

“Not only is Planned Parenthood getting richer by collecting public bailouts for abortion services, they’re also profiting off the taxpayer by making abortion services the core of their so-called family planning support – they try to push abortions on women so they can make more money,” said Brian Burch, President of “The time has come to end federal funding for Planned Parenthood.”

With the 40th Anniversary of Roe vs Wade coming up on Tuesday, the day after Obama’s Inauguration, we need to be much more vigilant when it comes to opposing taxpayer dollars for abortions and contraceptives. As a Catholic, I do not use contraceptives-never have, never will. So why should I be forced into paying for something that I am so against? We need to let our President know that religious freedom is one of our founding fathers’ rights. Over 50 million infants have lost their lives through abortion! We ought to be ashamed of ourselves for allowing such an atrocity to occur. It’s no small wonder why this country is going downhill. Please pray for the infants and for those responsible for taking their lives. We might just move mountains on this piece of legislation.

You fail to make a case.

The federal funds that PP receives are for specific services other than abortions.

Abortions represent 3% of services that PP performs and no federal funds are received for those services. I’ll remind you that abortion is a legal medical procedure under US law.

What you are saying is that, because PP performs some services that you do not personally approve of, for which they do not receive any federal funds, they should be denied federal funds for other services that are repaid by federal funds.

It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Some hospitals perform abortions. Should they not receive Medicare and Medicaid funds for chemotherapy? Or is it just Planned Parenthood? How is this not a bill of attainder?

the 300K+ abortions of course do not include the 1m+ ’emergency contraception packages’ which in reality are just another abortive technique!

I wonder if, when a woman walks in to Planned Parenthood for an abortion, she is being charged for that abortion … I don’t know alot about how these things work but if taxpayers are ‘subsidizing’ by handing out grants to a business can that business then turn around and bill clients for providing that service? If it is the case P. P. is charging for the services for which they are also receiving taxpayer dollars then they’d be making out on both sides of the transaction.

This law is unconstitutional. It’s like the federal government saying that they won’t fund a clinic unless they refuse to service African Americans. It’s a violation of freedom and is unconstitutional. Why do you continue to waste your time on crap that’s not going anywhere?

    • Msgr. Charles M. Mangan

J.M.J. We do it, Philip, because it is right, just as you promote homosexual marriage because you think that it is right.

You have often accused the Church of being unkind to homosexuals. But it appears that you don’t object when preborn children are treated with unkindness.

Since when is it crap to defend the unborn?

Philip. There is no constitutional conflict in this law. In fact, the Hyde Amendment is very similar and has not lost to any constitutional challenge.

Furthermore, it makes sense. Not everyone wants to be complicit with abortions. Having them be legal is a far different thing than asking everyone to pitch in to pay for them.

Do you really think it’s right and necessary to force people to pay for abortions against their will?

Hi Philip, June here-Guess what? the majority of women receiving abortions are African American, and there’s a chance that they might just wipe out the African American race, if they keep aborting their children! But the whole abortion thing is not about race; it’s about the way in which a baby is killed inside the womb. No one wants to admit that it’s murder, but that is what it is. I was a Senior in H.S. when I first heard the news about Roe vs Wade, and in my naiveté, I could not believe that women would ever want to kill their infant in the womb-boy, was I wrong! Now, 40 yrs later, we’re still fighting the same battle, still trying to keep women from killing in the womb, and still helping those who have had abortions, and have suffered because of it! Many women experience serious depression after the abortions, so much so that they want to commit suicide! What a woman goes through after aborting a child, is nothing short of torture. That’s why abortion is so evil. That’s why we fight to save not only the child, but the mother, too. That’s why we speak out every chance we get. God help us if we don’t end this thing soon!
