Ragged Old Flag

Barack Obama once proclaimed that he would “fundamentally change” America.  It comes as no surprise, then, that the Obama 2012 campaign has taken it upon themselves to present the country with a new flag.  And yes, you can buy it from the campaign website.  You’ve probably seen it, but here it is again:

The colors and the basic pattern are vaguely reminiscent of the beloved “Stars and Stripes” that Americans have revered for so long.  But this cheap affectation is not our national standard, nor even an artistic ”version” of it.  It’s crude, it’s arrogant, and it’s an insult to the American flag, and to those who have honored it by their sacrifice.

Johnny Cash wrote this poem, and I like it:

                           RAGGED OLD FLAG

I walked through a county courthouse square,
On a park bench an old man was sitting there.
I said, “Your old courthouse is kinda run down.”
He said, “Naw, it’ll do for our little town.”
I said, “Your flagpole has leaned a little bit,
And that’s a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it.

He said, “Have a seat”, and I sat down.
“Is this the first time you’ve been to our little town?”
I said, “I think it is.” He said, “I don’t like to brag,
But we’re kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag.”

“You see, we got a little hole in that flag there
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key
Sat watching it writing _Oh Say Can You See_.
And it got a bad rip in New Orleans
With Packingham and Jackson tuggin’ at its seams.”

“And it almost fell at the Alamo
Beside the Texas flag, but she waved on through.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag.”

“On Flanders Field in World War I
She got a big hole from a Bertha gun.
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp and low by the time it was through.
She was in Korea and Vietnam.
She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam.”

“She waved from our ships upon the briny foam,
And now they’ve about quit waving her back here at home.
In her own good land she’s been abused –
She’s been burned, dishonored, denied and refused.”

“And the government for which she stands
Is scandalized throughout the land.
And she’s getting threadbare and wearing thin,
But she’s in good shape for the shape she’s in.
‘Cause she’s been through the fire before
And I believe she can take a whole lot more.”

“So we raise her up every morning,
Take her down every night.
We don’t let her touch the ground
And we fold her up right.
On second thought I DO like to brag,
‘Cause I’m mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag.”

I think the flag we have now is just fine.  Don’t you?  I think these guys did too.

  1. Double Duece says:

The President of our country is the President of all Americans regardless of religious beliefs. John Adams the second President was most concerned about the religious freedom of Jews, not Christians when he wrote the constitution of Massachusets. The exclusion clasuse was written to protect the country from the state support of religions like the Church of England and our own Catholiic Church. They had very good foresight. We can practice our faith and beliefs as we believe, but not force them on others. You might not like it but thats how it is. There is no nation that has risen to the status as ours has by forcing one religions beliefs on those who disagree. Read the Federalist Papers it will help.

  2. Michael says:

Just as insulting as George Bush playing fighter pilot landing on an aircraft carrier?

    Oh wait, that was patriotic.

    1. Bush really was a fighter pilot though.

  3. Dominic Vieira says:

Not to mention defacing the flag is illegal…

    1. or using it as a logo. Chevrolet tried that with the corvette.

    2. Car Racing Catholic says:

How many Romney logos have I seen with a two stripe, two star flag or some other worse concoction? Trying to make an issue of this is really grabbing at straws and a signal of total desperation. You can’t even win the NASCAR fan vote. Hang it up.

  4. Brenda Pina says:

I personally find that obama flag MOST OFFENSIVE!!! My father, his father and his father before him fought for this country; from the Sioux Uprising (my great grandfather helped save the white people-full blooded Yankton Sioux), my grandfather served in WWI and my father in WWII and Korea, my brother in Vietnam, and cousins in Iraq and other areas of conflict. I am American, Yankton Sioux and Roman Catholic; and more importantly I vote my Catholic Conscience.

    1. Why do you find this offensive? I’m sorry, I just don’t understand.

      1. Joe M says:

Because it is putting Obama above country. Talk about out of touch.

      2. Curious says:

Obama is trying to replace our 50 states with one state, his own state. He would like nothing more than a tyrrany led by himself. He would like nothing more than to take STATE RIGHTS AWAY. He is so self absorbed. Men and women across the 50 STATES have fought to KEEP OUR FREEDOMS that Obama and his clan are trying to take away from us as USA citizens. Listen to his speech that he gave today at the UN. He continues to blame the burning of the Middle East on a stupid film that MANY of the Libyans had NO CHANCE to see. The President of their own country has stated that they do not have freedom to the internet services, it is state controlled, so the majority could not have seen the film. Their own President called it a well planned terrorist act. AND… all evidence collected thus far has done NOTHING to support Obama’s STUPID EXCUSES AND SPEECHES. IT ALL supports a well planned terrorist attack, one he has yet to call a TERRORIST ATTACK ON OUR COUNTRY. One of those killed even tweeted before he went to bed that he hoped he made it through the night because he suspected his Muslim Brotherhood “guard”. The same Muslim Brotherhood Obama supported, pushed forward, and STILL SUPPORTS!!! He has NO PROBLEMS putting our citizens in DANGER to save his “face” and “PLAY” correct. He has NO PROBLEM TAKING our freedoms and safety away. This new flag his team has created is NOT about the United States of America, you know the country that he is running for the presidency. It is all about himself as his usual. If you can’t see this, you CHOOSE to be blind and ignorant. I will pray for you and our country. God bless

  5. You just don’t like Obama. If your boy Money had done the same thing, you’d be fawning all over it.

    1. abadilla says:

No, ragingcatholic, if Romney were to do that, he would assured his own defeat at the polls next November. That’s the difference between the “decent” and the “indecent.” As for not liking Obama, what’s to like about a man who is the #1 enemy of the Catholic Church and the most pro-abortion President we ever had.

      1. He’s already assured he’s not getting elected by hiring a surrogate and including a clause in the contract that he could abort the baby if he wanted.

        1. abadilla says:

You want to present Romney in the worse possible light even accussing the man of something he does not believe in. In that sense you resemble Harry Reid who today insulted Romney once more as the hypocritical president keeps telling us all about “civility.”
If Romney were to state a major blunder, the liberal media would make sure to publish it to the four winds and would probably succeed in defeating him. There is absolutely no question in my mind the liberal media wants to destroy him. That’s why Mrs. Bush, the wife of Bush’ father once said, “it was a miracle when a Republican was elected to office,” given the hostility from the media toward Republicans.

    2. Joe M says:

No. I think the problem in this case is that the Obama campaign is placing Obama above country.

But, since you brought it up, what is there to like about Obama’s presidency? The economy is horrible. He’s horrible on social issues. His foreign policy has been a disaster. Look at the situation in the middle east. Obama crowned himself as the one who is sensitive to Muslim beliefs and culture. Yet, when a terrorist attack killed Americans this last 9/11, the Obama administration threw Muslims under the bus, lying that the attack was the result of Muslim reaction to a youtube video.
