Reader: Polls show Newt is frontrunner, Media attacks Santorum, +Wenski says Obama ‘seems to have deceived’ Catholics

Welcome to the Lunchtime Reader, where we assemble important stories to keep your eyes on.

Newt Gingrich is definitely the frontrunner now. Iowa: Newt 33, Romney 18, Ron Paul 18, Perry 11. http://cvote.to/9O  South Carolina: Gingrich 38, Romney 22, Perry 9, unsure 9. http://cvote.to/9P

But Gingrich is not without his critics. The last time Gingrich gained power both his popularity and that of his party started to plummet, says Ramesh Ponnuru. http://cvote.to/9Q   For this reason and others, Ponnuru (who had previously backed Pawlenty) has recently endorsed Romney. http://cvote.to/9W

This irritates me: The only national press Rick Santorum is getting now is criticism for campaigning while his daughter is very ill.  http://cvote.to/9R

Former Rep. Chris Carney, D-PA, considers another run for his old House seat. http://cvote.to/9S

CatholicVote’s political action committee is part of the reason Carney is a former member of Congress. http://cvote.to/9C

Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami notes that President Obama has not lived up to what he said regarding the conscience protections for Catholics who oppose abortion. (Before people go crazy and attack Wenski and CatholicVote, don’t assume that the Archbishop is surprised by this development. He’s trying to bring attention to this and educate his flock.) http://cvote.to/9T

Catholics denounce the Rockefeller Foundation for pushing abortion in Uruguay. http://cvote.to/9U

Happy Feast of Saint Nicholas! Celebrate the real Santa today. http://cvote.to/9V

Ponnuru hits the nail on the head regarding Newt. I would love to be proven wrong. But, it’s looking like we’re heading for Obama vs. McCain all over again. This time, the consequences will be even worse.
