Santorum Round-Up: Surging in South Carolina, Slandered by NPR, Defended by Gay Former Aide

Three big news items about Rick Santorum today.

CatholicVote, of course, endorsed Santorum yesterday. Read the press release here. This endorsement has generated a great deal of attention and press which should find its way into today’s lunchtime reader (stay tuned).

First, his poll numbers in the next two primary states, New Hampshire and South Carolina, have improved dramatically in polls taken after the Iowa caucuses:

South Carolina Primary Rasmussen Poll: Romney 27%, Santorum 24%, Gingrich 18%

New Hampshire Primary Rasmussen Poll: Romney 42%, Paul 18%, Santorum 13%, Huntsman 12%

Santorum basically needs to finish ahead of everyone besides Ron Paul and Mitt Romney in New Hampshire to remain a strong contendor. If he pulls off a win in South Carolina that would be huge, but if he places a fairly close second to Mitt Romney there he still remains very viable.

Second, National Public Radio and other lefty news outlets are trying to claim Santorum is a racist. This is untrue, according to several writers at National Review:

Lies, Damned Lies, and NPR by Shannen Coffin

Third, lefty news outlets are also trying to perpetuate the meme that Santorum is homophobic, a line of attack that was devastatingly countered by what some may consider an unlikely source – an openly gay aide who worked 10 years for the Senator:

Greg Hengler of TownHall: “An interesting interview with Robert Traynham, Rick Santorum’s former aide of ten years appeared on today’s Hardball with Matthews. Traynham tells Chris, “I was openly out to him.” and then goes on to defend Rick’s character and beliefs. An important interview considering the angle the media and the Democrat Party will take in trying to sink Santorum’s campaign.”

Watch how Chris Matthews tries to get the aide to go along with him that Santorum is homophobic – but Traynham will have none of it:

Bravo, Robert, for being far more intellectually honest than Chris Matthews in this exchange.

As I tweeted this morning, we’re going to see a lot of nasty attacks against Santorum in the coming weeks, but these attacks say more about the attackers than they do about Rick.

Don’t look now, but not only did Cardinal George (rightly) apologize for comparing KKK marches to Gay Pride Parades, but he acknowledged the there is “ongoing discussion” about the Church’s teaching on gays and lesbians.

Ongoing discussion. Around here, no “doctrinal” points are ever to be discussed. They’re settled.

Is this the way it’s going to be for the next 11 months – denying something that anyone with ears can hear loud and clear? Face it, he said “Black” people. If he doesn’t think that what he said was racist, he should defend what he said instead of insulting the intelligence of the American public by claiming he said something different. Blah people? Really? The fact that he’s telling such a ridiculous lie about it when it’s right there on video makes it look like he has something to hide. And for people like Peters to try to deflect attention from it by claiming anti-Catholic bigotry is just absurd.

    1. John Long says:

      Indeed.

And I’m still waiting for the original post to be updated/corrected. The writer has lied about what NPR reported.

Unless the post is corrected, we’ll have to assume this is purely a propaganda site, with zero credibility.

    2. Mark says:

This just in: It’s racist to mention Blacks!

  3. John Long says:

“Second, National Public Radio and other lefty news outlets are trying to claim Santorum is a racist.”

That’s a lie. It seems odd that a website that calls itself “Catholic Vote” would ignore the 9th Commandment.

If it’s not a lie, please link to the NPR story which claims Santorum is a racist and post the passage.

    Otherwise, edit your post.

    Thank you.

@John Long. If you haven’t been around here long, you’ll start to notice that anything that disagrees with the opinions of the writers is leftist, heretical and anti-Catholic.

I’m still waiting for the post to be edited/amended. There is nothing in the original NPR piece that claimed Santorum was a racist.

The charge that Rick Santorum is racist is not only ridiculous, it’s slanderous. He has an extensive record of working with the black community and has never even demonstrated a hint of racism in his many years of public service. These types of attacks are expected by the liberal press, although they are sickening. People of good will, Santorum supporters or not, should be ashamed if they perpetuate it.

In all humility Tom I do not know how you good folk here at Catholic Vote put up with so much crap. I thought college was a trip…and junior high sucked but this? This is CRAZY! Okay have a nice weekend.

    1. GREG SMITH says:

Tom, Joshua et. al a I agree with Davide. If the incivility we’re starting to see escalates, it may destroy the forum. Greg

      1. Davide says:

@Greg different opinions rock! Think we all can agree on this. I am as opinionated as they come. However I noticed on this website starting in early summer many trolls would stop by about the same time Catholic Vote was running articles about same-sex ‘marriage’ laws. Some homosexual advocacy groups hire persons to search through the web hunting down websites that are not ‘gay friendly’. Once they zone in on a website they target it for months. My own personal blog has been hacked 3 times in the last 2 years. Obviously, I have no proof it was homosexual advocacy groups doing this but I am thinking there will come a day I am going to walk out the front door of my home and get “Glittered Bombed” by fairy dust. I have the feeling it is a homosexual advocacy group and /militant homo extremists who have targeted Catholic Vote.
