Video: Pope gives away Zucchetto

Pope John Paul II would do this often but it is rare to see Pope Benedict continue the tradition of the Zucchetto-swap:

Rome Reports reports:

The Pope gave his skullcap or zucchetto to Mexico after the general audience. Mexico’s state of Guanajuato gave the Pope a Nativity that will remain in the Paul VI Hall throughout Christmas.

  1. Geoffrey says:

I read in “The Church Visible” that Venerable Pope John Paul the Great continued this custom, but almost always in private. Pope Benedict seems to be taking it public, as I have seen him do this more than once.

P.S. I knew someone (who knew someone) who had one such JPII zuccheto, and there was one hair stuck to the inside. Can someone say soon-to-be “first class relic”? :-)

Actually, it is the other way around: JPII did it on his first years, but discontinued the practice… BXVI restarted the tradition, and he does this quite often…
