Try this syllogism:

Major premise — The Church cannot contradict an Ordinary Magisterium papal encyclical because it would be untrue ( the previous teaching being infallibly taught) and therefore to do so would destroy the Church’s credibility.

Minor premise — Humanae Vitae is a papal encyclical.

Conclusion: The Church will never contradict Humane Vitae.

If there Church were to contradict its previous Teaching on faith and morals, all Catholic Haters and Dissidents would have been correct; the Church would not have been given the Holy Spirit’s gift of infallibility and all credibility would be lost. To do so is to commit suicide!!!!!

I’m confused – how is the Church asking the government or secular culture to reduce the number of women using contraception? Although I suspect stronger education of Catholics as to why it is a sin and how that sin endangers your immortal soul may be helpful…

No Brian, the Church can’t be blamed for calling a sin a sin, period! What a sin is does not depend on how a majority feels. We are NOT the episcopal church that decides on majority vote what a sin is and is not.
If 90% of Catholic women want to embrace sin, that’s their business, but it isn’t the job of the Church of Christ to change the teaching for them. The women who use contraception do so because they feel more confortable with what the secular culture tells them, than with what the Church they claim to belong to teaches them.

Isn’t amazing, that Matthews of all people would have anything to say about Catholicism? Frankly I’m so tired of these dissidents, if Burke were to become the first American Pope, they will all start running for the door before excommunications hurl from Rome.

The next Pope doesn’t need to change the Church’s teaching on contraception. But, he should say, “Over 90% of American Catholic women of child-bearing age use contraceptives and that is NOT the Government’s fault, that is NOT the President’s fault. It is the Church’s fault and Holy Mother Church will NOW take responsibility for that and STOP blaming ‘the secular culture’ for that.” The Church should NOT ask the Government or ‘the secular culture’ to do its job. It is the Church’s job to bring that 90% figure down.
