LOOP: Alabama passes near-total ban on abortion

ALABAMA PRO-LIFE BILLThe Alabama Legislature gave final passage on a near-total ban on abortion. An amendment to allow for abortion if the mother is raped was rejected by the Alabama Senate. Gov. Kay Ivey is pro-life but she said would make a final decision on the bill once it reaches her desk.  READ
MICHIGAN PRO-LIFE BILL  The Michigan Legislature passed a bill to ban dismemberment abortions. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, has promised to veto the bill. If Whitmer vetoes the bill, pro-life activists will launch a petition drive to get the legislation enacted without a governor’s signature. READ
TRUMP JR TO TESTIFY Donald Trump, Jr.., has agreed to appear for a limited interview before the Senate Intelligence Committee for a second round of questions. The decision to testify ends a tense standoff that divided GOP lawmakers all week.  READ
EQUALITY ACT The White house criticized the Equality Act legislation, but stopped short of issuing a veto threat. “The Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all; however, this bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights,” a Trump administration official told the press.  READ 
GOP IMMIGRATION PLAN President Trump is expected to unveil his immigration proposal very soon, according to Republican senators. “The president is going to be giving a speech on it maybe as early as later this week,” said Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX. “So I’ll be interested to see how he rolls this out.”  READ 
SOCIETY, NOT JUST ECONOMY  “We must put aside the tired orthodoxies of years past and forge instead a new politics of national renewal. We must begin by acknowledging that GDP growth alone cannot be the measure of this nation’s greatness, and so it cannot be the only aim of this nation’s policy. DEMANDING NAMES Victims of clerical sex abuse in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul-Minneapolis have filed a federal lawsuit against the Vatican claiming that the Holy See shares responsibility for the mishandling of a sex abuse case.  READ 
COMPENSATING VICTIMS California bishops announced a compensation program for victims of clerical sexual abuse. “We have been providing pastoral care and financial support for victim-survivors here in the Archdiocese for many years. We will continue to do so,” said Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles. READ
