LOOP: Democrats win big in Virginia

VIRGINIA IS BLUE  It was expected to be a close race for governor. But Ralph Northam trounced his GOP challenger by 9 points, leading a blue wave throughout Virginia. And if Congressional Republicans don’t start getting legislation passed, the GOP is in huge trouble in 2018. http://cvote.it/2yHosQT

NEW JERSEY  A Democrat won the gubernatorial race in New Jersey. This means that if Sen. Bob Menendez gets convicted in his corruption trial, he’ll likely try to stay in office in January so that a Democrat can replace him. http://cvote.it/2m08Nq1

NOTRE DAME FLIP FLOP  So Notre Dame will now offer contraception coverage in their health care plans after all — reversing a decision they made just last week. But Notre Dame claims that the contraception coverage will not be funded by the university. They did not specify this arrangement. http://cvote.it/2m091gR

CULTURE  The actress who told Conan O’Brien that she made pro-abortion donations in Mike Pence’s name has sparked a boycott over Jim Beam — the liquor which she pitches in TV commercials. http://cvote.it/2m5yhm2

GOVT REFORM  It is extremely difficult to fire government workers. The layoff and discharge rate for federal employees is only one-third of the private sector. But a House panel approved legislation that would make it a little easier. http://cvote.it/2yFfEez

BISHOPS’ ELECTION  Next week, the U.S. bishops gather to elect a new leader for their pro-life committee. One candidate for the position is Cardinal Cupich, who in 2011 discouraged priests from participating in 40 Days for Life prayer vigils outside of abortion facilities. http://cvote.it/2yFgmbB

DON’T GET SOFT   Soft Christians ignore the hard lessons of the Russian Revolution, says Fr. George Rutler. “There still are Russians old enough to remember seeing priests nailed to the doors of their churches,” he said. http://cvote.it/2m1I4t7
