PRAY FOR FLORIDA // Let’s join together and pray for all Floridians as they endure Hurricane Irma, which made landfall and is marching up Florida. Pray to Saint Medard, the patron saint for protection from bad storms. News coverage: http://cvote.it/2xf7E1W
POPE CHANGES LITURGY PROCESS // Over the weekend, Pope Francis issued a new directive on liturgical translations conferring a greater role to national bishops’ conferences. The liberal Jesuit magazine America was excited about the change. There will certainly be more opinions on the document in the days ahead. For a straight news account of the changes: http://cvote.it/2xfuPc6
LOSING RUST BELT CATHOLICS // Pittsburgh-based journalist Selena Zito understood the 2016 election perhaps better than anyone. Unlike most reporters in the Beltway, Zito actually talked and listened to voters all across the country. Her newest article is about how Democrats are alienating Rust Belt Catholic voters. She writes about a gas station she visited where a TV blared actress Martha Plimpton’s celebration of her abortion. The manager behind the counter retorted: “And they wonder why people don’t vote for Democrats around here anymore.” http://cvote.it/2xeI3Gb
BANNON ON 60 MINUTES // Here’s the interview everyone in politics will be talking about today. In a long interview with Charlie Rose, former White House Adviser Steve Bannon came out swinging against Congressional Republicans for not supporting Donald Trump’s agenda. “They’re gonna be held accountable.” And Bannon had even harsher words for the Bush administration for getting the U.S. into an Iraqi War and brought China into the WTO. “I hold these people in contempt — total contempt…. they’re idiots,” said Bannon. PRIMARY CHALLENGERS? // When Bannon said he would hold Republicans accountable, he was apparently serious. Now at Breitbart, Bannon is planning on running challengers to Senate Republicans (like Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada and Jeff Flake of Arizona) who are not backing Trump’s policies. http://cvote.it/2xeKzMT
CATHOLIC PRIME MINISTER? // Kudos to Jacob Rees-Mogg. The British politician said on live TV that he was opposed to abortion and same-sex “marriage.” And the media in London lost their minds. But the general public of Britain seemed to have appreciated Rees-Mogg for his honesty. He is quickly rising in popularity, and some want him to become the leader of the conservative Tory party. http://cvote.it/2xeXiyS
CATHOLICISM VS GENDER INSANITY // Archbishop Charles Chaput: “God exists. His Creation has a natural order. Our sexuality is part of that life-giving order. Sooner or later, nature defeats ideology. It doesn’t matter how strong or widely shared or persuasive a bad system of ideas might seem to be. It will always lose. The trouble, as we learned in the last century, is that foolish and perverse thinking can take a long time to die. And it can ruin countless lives and poison whole societies in the process.” http://cvote.it/2xf6LGl
